Meet the Bancrofts

We are Murray and Sarah Bancroft, growers and producers of Pinot Noir on a 4-acre vineyard in Kaleden BC that we planted ourselves in 2016. We are committed to farming without using herbicides, pesticides,or synthetic fertilizers and practice low-intervention winemaking to produce delicious, honest, expressive wines that speak to the vintage and the terroir. We strive to make wines that are energetic, interesting, and delicious. We hope you enjoy them!

Hailing from Vancouver, husband and wife Murray and Sarah Bancroft come from culinary and media backgrounds respectively. They have both travelled to France extensively since their early 20s, and took their young daughters to Paris for a sabbatical year in 2016-2017. With a long-time interest in wine, Murray, or “the trained pallet” as we like to call him, has participated in both vendange (harvest) and winemaking in Champagne and Bordeaux, and continues to return every year. While working as an international culinary consultant, he spent evenings and weekends studying viniculture at California’s U.C. Davis. For her part, Sarah enjoys “researching” wine (especially rosé) with friends and family any day of the week.

The Bancrofts are currently based in Vancouver, travelling frequently to the Okaganagan and Palm Springs, where they have a mid-century modern home. The spirit of Birch Block is strongly influenced by their love of France, California, the Okanagan Valley, conviviality, family, style and fun.
